Job Description: Epicocconone is a fluorescent natural product that has found applications in proteomics, cell biology and enzyme assays. Its discovery and development have led to several commercial products and a spin-off company. This ARC funded Discovery project, in collaboration with researchers at the University of Rouen (CNRS, France) and IIT Bombay is aimed at understanding the fluorescence behaviour of epicocconone and the design of simpler more efficient analogues that could find application in biotechnology. The successful applicant will run ab initio and DFT calculations to predict UV, CD and fluorescence spectra of epicocconone and several simpler analogues we have already synthesised. This will be followed by design and computational analysis of even simpler analogues. The project could also entail synthesis and evaluation of these second generation analogues.
Applicants should have 1st class Honours (or equivalent) or a research Masters in computational chemistry and/or synthetic organic chemistry. Stipend will be A$22,500 tax exempt for 3 years.
