Scholarship Description: The Chromatin Dynamics group, Section for Functional Genomics, Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen is recruiting one highly qualified PhD-candidate to study the effects of protein modification on meiotic recombination in the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe. The project aims at understanding how protein modifications, in particular sumoylation, affect recombination in eu- and heterochromatin. The methods used will combine molecular biology, yeast classical genetics, specialized gel electrophoresis (2D gel electrophoresis for the detection of recombination intermediates; PFGE for the detection of meiotic double-strand breaks), chromatin immunoprecipitation and microarray hybridization. The project will be carried out partly at the Biocenter and partly at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle, Washington, USA, in the laboratory of Dr. Gerald Smith.
Scholarship Applicants should hold an MSc degree in biology or biochemistry, have a good grasp of yeast genetics and experience with all methods listed above. Preference will be given to applicants having conducted part of their studies abroad from their MSc-awarding country. Fluency in spoken and written English is a strong requirement. The fellowship is open to both Danish and international applicants.
An assessment committee will be appointed to evaluate the applications. The final selection of a successful candidate will be made by Geneviève Thon and Head of Department, based on the recommendations of the evaluation committee. The successful candidate will then be requested to formally apply for enrolment as a PhD student at the PhD school of Science, University of Copenhagen.
